Fun at SeaWorld San Diego
Where can you look a shark in the eye and live to tell the tale? Only at SeaWorld San Diego! One of California's premier family vacation and travel destinations, SeaWorld San Diego features some exciting aquatic shows, amusements, and other adventures. No wonder both kids and adults love this place - it's educational as well as profoundly entertaining.
Friendly Encounters
Only at SeaWorld San Diego are you able to have a close-up encounter with sharks, penguins, dolphins, whales, polar bears, walruses, arctic foxes, seals, and other beautiful sea and land creatures. There are several attractions such as the Shark Encounter, where you will walk through a 57-foot acrylic tube running the length of the sharks' habitat, and view hundreds of fascinating sand tiger, bonnethead, blacktip and whitetip sharks swimming overhead.
If sharks are a little too scary for you, check out Penguin Encounter, where you can chill out with nearly 300 Antarctic penguins swimming and waddling in a snow-filled habitat. Or step into the Wild Arctic, where you'll find yourself face-to-face with polar bears, beluga whales, walruses, arctic foxes and seals.
Want to meet Shamu? You will not only have a chance to get up close and personal with him in Shamu: Close Up, but you'll also get to see him in action in shows like Shamu Believe and Shamu Rocks. Shamu Believe is a captivating and visually stunning show that will transport your heart to the edge of wonder. If you're feeling a little more rock 'n' roll, Shamu Rocks combines the flash of a rock concert with a splash!
Getting Wet 'N' Wild
If you're up for a little splash, SeaWorld San Diego is the place to go for wet 'n' wild rides like Shipwreck Rapids, where you spin and splash through river rapids, plunge through an underground cavern, and dodge dripping cargo nets as you swirl around a tropical island. You can also take a Journey to Atlantis, which begins as a peaceful ride, but erupts into an adventure where you will have to brave twists, turns, and watery falls of mythic proportions.
Not in the mood to get drenched? There are other exciting rides you might want to check out such as the Wild Arctic Ride, where you'll get to experience an adventure of real bumps, jumps and zips once you board the simulated jet helicopter for an unforgettable motion-based "flight" to the Base Station Wild Arctic. If you want to do some sightseeing, you can take a refreshing six-minute roundtrip ride across beautiful Mission Bay on the Bayside Skyride, or rise up more than 265 feet in the Sky Tower, only to witness an incredible panoramic view of the city of San Diego.
Dining Options at SeaWorld San Diego
You can really work up an appetite after experiencing all the wild rides, amazing shows and exciting attractions that SeaWorld San Diego has to offer. Luckily there are dozens of places to choose from when deciding where to eat. Casual cafés include Shipwreck Reef and Coconut Bay, offering delicious meals and quick service. If you're looking to spend a little more time eating and relaxing, there's Calypso Bay Smokehouse, where you can enjoy the slow-smoked flavor of barbecue, chicken, ribs and more. If you have not a minute to spare and you don't want to miss out on the action, there are a few options for you: Breakfast with Shamu, a Showtime Picnic, or even Dinner with Shamu! Enjoy a hot breakfast while admiring the majestic whales frolicking in the morning sun, or a poolside dinner while the friendly trainers provide opportunities to capture incredible photos. Your dining experience is sure to be a memorable one!
Insider Tips
If you love animals...
- Make some time to feed the animals: If you want to get up close and personal with the dolphins, sea lions and stingrays, check the feeding schedule in the morning, and give yourself some extra time to get a great spot right at the water's edge.
- Meet an animal trainer in person: Most people don't know this, but SeaWorld's Dine with Shamu program is the only time guests can get backstage access to the Killer Whale habitat, and witness the remarkable bond between the whales and their trainers. Reservations are recommended as seating is limited.
If you're bringing young kids...
- Bring a disposable waterproof camera: You are bound to get wet either on the rides, or during the shows if you're in the Soak Zone at the Shamu Stadium. It's more fun to watch the kids' reactions if you don't have to watch out for an expensive camera. Also, pack a parka or pick one up at the gift shop. That way you can stay dry and still get in on the fun.
- Feed their imagination: Look for interactive work stations and computers located throughout the park that give kids a fun way to learn about the animals they meet.
- Make an autograph book: Put together an autograph book with kids ahead of time, then catch the Shamu and Crew characters from 9am to noon near the front gate.
- Catch the show before the show: Take your seat for the Clyde and Seamore show at least 30 minutes ahead of time. Late-comers miss out on their zany pre-show antics.
A few last tips from those in the know...
- Choose your seats wisely: You will get drenched if you sit in the front seat of Journey to Atlantis.
- Beat the heat: Temperatures can get quite high, especially in the middle of the day. Plan to take in these "cool places" when the thermometer rises: Wild Arctic, Penguin Encounter, Manatee Rescue, Shark Encounter, or any one of the three Aquariums.
- Remember the kid in you: Don't be surprised if you find yourself choked up in the presence of Shamu, or your arms covered with goose bumps in 85 degree weather as your hand touches a dolphin. There's a truly special connection between humans and animals, so embrace your experience!
