Whale Watching in Dana Point, CA
Each winter, thousands of California Gray Whales leave the cold Artic Seas and follow the coastline to the warm, calm waters of Southern California and Baja. This migration brings pods of Giant Grays right through Dana Point, where they can be easily seen and photographed. Many believe Dana Point is a "reference" landmark for the whales and is famous as a gathering area for whale watchers. People from all over California gather together to witness the migration of the Gray Whale, because it is indeed the most accessible for human observation. During their southern migration, they tend to hug the shore. This allows for visitors to approach the whales in a peaceful manner, letting us make more intimate contact with them. Due to the unique shape of Dana Point Harbor, it is ideally located for easy and quick access to board a boat and be in the open ocean in five minutes. Whale watching has, in fact, become a traditional activity in California. Dana Point Harbor is the official "Whale Watching Capital of the West".

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I bring?
It does get a bit chilly out on the high seas, so you definitely want to bundle up. Make sure to bring extra layers. Also bring a camera or video recorder to get footage of the beautiful whales and dolphins, as well as binoculars to see them up close! To protect yourself from getting sunburned, you might want to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. And finally, while our boats are very safe and stable, you will be in the ocean. If you are susceptible to motion sickness, make sure you take preventative measures beforehand, or bring seasickness tablets with you.
What happens if it rains?
If it's safe, we go! Fortunately we don't get much rain here in Southern California. However for those times, the captain will make a decision as to the safety of the voyage just prior to departure time. You should definitely be prepared and at the dock, ready to go! The cockpit is covered and can be enclosed on three sides, so most folks stay pretty dry even in a surprise downpour.
How early should I arrive to check in before the trip?
Please arrive no later than 20 minutes before the cruise departs.
When is whale watching season?
It's always whale watching season! Grey Whale season starts the day after Thanksgiving every year, and typically runs until the end of April. January to March are the peak times for Grey Whales. Blue Whale season runs from May until November. Whatever the season, we also usually see pods of dolphins, sea lions, squadrons of pelicans and other sea-faring birds.
What is the best time of the day to see whales?
Whales migrate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is no "best" time to see whales, but the weather on the water tends to be calmer in the morning.
What if I don't see any whales or dolphin?
We guarantee that you will see whales or dolphin. If neither are sighted, you will receive a voucher to come back again for free! These vouchers never expire and can be used anytime.
How close do we get to the whales?
