San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park

Step into an adventure like no other. The San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park immerses you in an active, hands-on safari experience where herds of animals roam natural habitats in a vast reserve. Explore walking trails that reveal unexpected sights of lions lounging in the grasslands, antelope and giraffes mixing and mingling, and rhinos wallowing in waterholes. Engage in close encounters with rare species and discover the exciting surprises of conservation in action at this leading-edge wildlife park. The Wild Animal Park is located approximately 30 miles north of The San Diego Zoo.

The Journey Into Africa Tour
The continent of Africa is the second largest on Earth, with a dizzying mix of habitats, animals, cultures, and languages. The Journey Into Africa Tour is designed to give you a glimpse of the amazing diversity found there.

From your tour vehicle, inspired by the legendary safari trains of Africa, you will see all your favorites: curious giraffes, massive rhinos, graceful gazelles, impressively horned antelope, as well as new species. During the tour, you’ll learn about the many programs we have in place to help conservation efforts in Africa.

During the Journey Into Africa Tour, you’ll see eye to eye with wildlife and get a new appreciation for just how beautiful and diversely populated Africa really is. As you disembark, don’t think your connection to Africa is ending; this tour was created especially for you and will continue to change so that your own journey into Africa can be never-ending.

Lion Camp®
You're face to face with a lion, and its big, golden eyes are staring at you with piercing intensity. Is this it - are you lunch? No! You're just experiencing the amazing close encounters of the Wild Animal Park's Lion Camp!

There is a thick glass window between you and the lions, but when you're standing there and one comes charging up to the rocks only inches away, you might just forget that for a moment. Lion Camp is designed to bring you right into the world of African lions, and you won't want to miss this exhibit!

Elephant Overlook
We have two large exhibit areas for our elephant herds - one for our Asian elephant group and another one for our African elephants. An elevated walking path called the Elephant Overlook takes you out between the two exhibit areas to see what our pachyderms are up to. You can also view elephants next to Tembo Stadium or along the road next to the Asian elephants' enclosure.

Hidden Jungle®
This tropical rainforest is teeming with wildlife that is absolutely beautiful, but often hard to see. In the Hidden Jungle, a glass-walled greenhouse exhibit, you get a chance to observe the wonderful secrets of the rain forests, which are rapidly disappearing around the world.

You'll begin your Hidden Jungle trek in an earthen crevice beneath the rainforest floor. As your eyes adjust to the dark, you can pick out tree roots snaking down the walls from the world above. Mud walls come to life with invertebrates, including spiny stick insects and scorpions, all safely sealed with transparent barriers and dimly lit from within.

Filled with lush plantings and botanical beauties of the rainforest, Hidden Jungle will show you the delight and wonder of looking under and among the leaves, instead of just above them. This exhibit is not only extremely educational, but you will be in awe of what lies beneath the surface.

Shows at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park
(All shows included with Wild Animal Park admission)

Animal Trackers
Test your knowledge of wildlife trivia as you play along during Animal Trackers, held at Benbough Amphitheatre. The game show-themed program includes visits from some very special animal guests! Offered daily at 1pm and 4pm.

Frequent Flyers® Bird Show

An East African crowned crane in flight is a stunning sight viewed by only a privileged few, until now! The crane is one of the many stars of the Wild Animal Park's bird show, which lets you witness various birds in full flight. Offered daily at 12pm and 3pm.

Animal Encounters

This interactive program gives you an opportunity to have face-to-face contact with the Park’s animal ambassadors such as a cheetah, alligator, serval, and other rare and exotic animals. You may interact with trainers and ask questions about the species. Interactions happen throughout the Park; check your Park map insert for times and locations.

NOTE: Show times may vary or be cancelled due to weather or animal health needs.
