Kijubi Team Goes Sailing!

Hello Everybody!

Kijubi had another exciting Friday this week. In order to prepare for our Deal of the Week and to make sure you all are getting the best experience possible during our activities, we decided to test it out ourselves!

Four of the Kijubi team drove up to Redondo Beach today and hooked up with Wes from South Bay sailing, hopped on a J80 sailboat, and set off on a one-hour educational sailing cruise. We learned about all the basic parts of a sail boat, how to steer and adjust the sails, and, most importantly, to watch our heads when the boom swings. There were a few close calls but we all survived without taking an unexpected dip.

I’ve learned that sailing is an amazing activity. Like all fun hobbies and activities, it’s pretty easy to initially pick up and challenging to master. The greatest thing about this kind of cruise is that it can either be an educational adventure or a relaxing cruise. Wes was very kind to answer all sailing questions, and did a great job of instructing and allowed us to learn hands-on.

This is the perfect activity if you’re looking to get away from civilization for a little bit and experience the beautiful open pacific ocean first hand.

Youngest person to row an ocean

In my more youthful days I was proud to call myself a collegiate rower. Rowing is one of the most beautiful and strenuous sports out there. A full body workout that requires year-round dedication to peak physical condition, while at the same time it provides  picturesque sunrises reflecting off pristine rivers, lakes, harbors and estuaries. So when this story came across my desk, I had to share with you.

This past Sunday, Katie Spots became the youngest person to cross an ocean solo, and the first American to cross one without any help from the mainland. She completed this feat in 70 days 22 hours and 15 minutes, coming ashore in Georgetown, Guyana, in south America. She left Dakar, Senegal, in a 19ft yellow, custom made, rowboat.  A driving factor in her 2,817-mile journey was an opportunity to raise more than $70,000 for the Blue Water run Foundation which supports drinking water throughout the world.

Here’s a map of her completed journey.

Kijubi Getting Hacked While Traveling?

One thing most Kijubi customers have in common is a love for travel and getting out to see the world. If you’re like us, you probably spend a good amount of time in hotels on your business trips and adventures. Needless to say, we were quite alarmed when we read this Gadling post (one of our favorite travel blogs) discussing how hackers went after hotel networks more than any other any other destination in 2009. Yikes!
This hit home for us, so we did some additional digging from their source at Dark Reading and uncovered data from TrustWave’s Spider Labs highlighting that malicious attacks on hotel networks accounted for 38% of all known security breeches in 2009, more than the financial services industry (19%) and retail industries (14.2) combined.

To make matters worse, the hotels didn’t discover that the breeches had even occurred for an average of 156 days, leaving plenty of time for the cyber-criminals to use stolen credit card information, or take advantage of the personal data harvested for any number of identity theft scams.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t take an expert hacker to tap into a hotel’s network. It’s often quite literally an open door due to the weak firewalls employed by the hotel and poor passwords used by the guests.

So what can be done to keep your data safe when travelling? For starters, choose a hotel that uses Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption, which requires a password to get on the network and encrypts all the data that is being transmitted.

If you’re doing business in your hotel room, make sure you log in through your company’s dedicated VPN and that your laptop has up to date firewalls and anti-virus software installed. Your IT guy will probably be all too happy to check that for you if you’re not technically inclined.

You can bring your own wireless data card so that you don’t have to rely on the hotel’s open WiFi network for connectivity. This can also come in handy in airport terminals and coffee shops, two other prime hunting grounds for would-be hackers.

Lastly, you can use any number of data encryption software solutions available today that serve to lock down the files, photos and videos on your computer. Many of the more advanced encryption solutions now provide the ability to store and encrypt your online passwords so that you’ll be protected when you do have to enter them using a public network.

With the increasing instances of cyber-criminals targeting travelers, it’s crucial that we all understand the potential threats associated with data and identity theft. We know we’ll think twice the next time we get on a hotel network.

Kijubi @ Open Angel Forum in Boulder Colorado

Open Angel Forum Logo

Kijubi was recently invited to pitch the company to super-angel investors at the Open Angel Forum (OAF) in Boulder, CO. It was fantastic! OAF is an event where 5-6 chosen companies (out of 100+) are invited to pitch to 10+ chosen investors (from 30 or so) in a laid back, no hassle, fun, and FREE way. Yes, FREE! It’s all paid for by about 5 service providers. The first OAF took place in Los Angeles, as it is the home to Jason Calacanis, who started the concept in an effort to give entrepreneurs a way to raise capital without spending thousands of dollars in the process. What do I mean by laid back? Let’s put it this way… some of the guys pitched with a beer in hand! Check out Mark Suster’s response on how it went in OAF LA.

OAF Boulder is mainly run by three guys – Jason Calacanis (Mahalo), David Cohen (TechStars) and Brad Feld (Foundry Group). The companies who pitched in the inaugural OAF Boulder were FaceFile, TeamSnap, Odojo, Grogger, Decasun, and Kijubi. Here is my story:

I arrived in Denver at about 10am (huge airport!), picked up my rental car and hit the road to Boulder. It took about 45 minutes to get there and I had a meeting with David to review the pitch at 3:15pm. With time to spare, I decided to have lunch at Hapa Sushi, which was actually VERY good and only a few blocks away from the TechStars office. Finished lunch, had my quick meeting with with @DavidCohen and @Jason, and went off to discover Boulder for a few hours -  what an AWESOME city!

At 6 o’clock I arrived at a very nice gallery where the pitch was to take place. Some guys were walking across the street with me and one of them immediately asked me if I was going to OAF. I said yes, and he introduced himself right away – Brad Feld – what a nice guy! As people arrived, drinks were being served at an open bar and hors d’œuvre passed around – very classy. At about 6:45 all the presenters were asked to enter a room where we would stay throughout every presentation. We were not allowed to watch the other guys pitch. We all thought that was a bit odd, but it allowed us time to share ideas and relax. I was the last to pitch, so I had time to hear everyone’s reaction to the crowd. I know I felt the same way as everyone else. It was a serious group of individuals who are there to invest their money in companies with huge potential.

We had 7 minutes to pitch, which is plenty to tell your story. The Q&A session brought great questions about the business and it’s potential. They were right on. I wasn’t asked anything I couldn’t answer right away, but as Jason said: if you are asked something you don’t know the answer to, just be honest! This is a very intelligent group of people, and they can smell BS from a mile away.

All in all, it was a great experience. We had interest from some of the investors, and look forward to working with them. @BFeld (Brad) told me (and I agree) that the best way to present your company is to demo your product and speak to it. If you are going to use a PowerPoint presentation, keep the slides to a minimum.

Here is a video and photo from the event:
