Kijubi Canyoneering?

Canyoneering - definitely one of Kijubi’s most popular activities and one for which we continually get rave reviews.

All summer we’ve been getting amazing feedback about this fast growing sport that has only become widely popular in the USA in the last few years.  One such glowing report came from a Kijubi partner, SCOA (Southern California Outdoors Adventurers) when they took 13 adventure-seeking Los Angelinos out to try their hand at scaling rock faces and rappelling down waterfalls.

With reviews like that, what are you waiting for?  Now it’s your turn… Kijubi canyoneering?

About SCOA: After first trying out canyoneering in July, Kijubi’s partner, SCOA, has hit the mountains several times this summer, bringing back group after group as demand for canyoneering continued. SCOA unites like-minded activity seekers to try out new and unusual outdoors activities.  So, for those of you who like the idea of trying canyoneering but are a bit short of fun folks to go with, SCOA is a great resource for you to be able to meet new friends and try exciting activities.  Check out what they have on here and, of course, if you don’t see your favorite Kijubi activity on their calendar, let them (or us!) know so we can get it set up!

Kayaking to Wailua Falls

It’s an exciting time right now for us because we’re gearing up for summer (my favorite time of the year) and we get to launch our kayak tours from the the beautiful and breathtaking Montage hotel. What a great spot! You can explore beaches, cliffs, caves and the Seal Rock, a nature sanctuary home to hundreds of California Sea Lions. It truly is one of Southern California’s most beautiful coastlines.

Speaking of kayaking and beautiful places, I’m reminded of my very first trip to Hawaii. My family and my mom’s twin sister’s family decided to embark on a family vacation together to Kauai about 5 years ago….11 travelers total (we’re very close ;-) ). On the trip, one of our family adventures was a kayak trip up the Wailua River, one of the longest navigable rivers in Hawaii. If you’ve never adventured here before, then I must note this is definitely a must do! The scenery is stunning, backed by tropical valleys and radiant smells of plumeria.

Only eight of us rented kayaks from a little Hawaiian village at Kamokila, and such a quaint little place this is. The village features about a dozen hatch buildings revelaing how Hawaiians would have lived hundreds of years ago. My sister and I partnered up in one kayak, her in front and me in the back. I remember feeling like a deer in head lights as we paddled up the river – lush valleys, birds singing and the “smell” of Hawaii. The beauty is transcending. In fact, I was so overwhelmed I stopped paddling and made my sister do all the work. Lol. Zigzagging up the river – that was the moment she gave my the nickname “Dazy.” It’s important to take in such beauty.

Paddling up the river brought us to a secluded waterfall – Secret Falls. This is a great spot for swimming and also where one of Hawaii’s most bizarre and famous attractions is located – Fern Grotto, a lava rock covered with tropical overhanging ferns. The grotto acts as an amphitheatre and creates amazing sounds.

On the return trip I remember being so at peace from the tradewinds. Moving downstream definitely provided quite a workout on this leg of the journey (maybe more for my sister). I believe at this point my sister was ready to throw me overboard! This place is truly a fantasyland of Hawaiian deep jungle scenery. I can’t wait to go back, though I have a feeling I’ll be in my own kayak on the next adventure.

Havasupai Falls

Today I received the “Havasupai Falls Trip” email from a friend of mine who plans an annual hiking and camping trip to this pristine location in Arizona. Not long ago, this name was completely foreign to me. I remember staring back at him with that odd look on my face…“Have…Hava what?”

Havasupai Falls, better known as Havasu Falls, is by far one of the most amazingly beautiful waterfalls located in the Grand Canyon. There are three main falls in the Havasu Canyon; Havasu Falls, Mooney Falls and Navajo Falls. Unlike some waterfalls in Arizona, the Havasu Creek ones are good year-round. Although I have yet to experience this hike, I’ve been told it does take a great deal of effort to get there, but it looks as though the reward is definitely worth it. Our standard plan is to begin the hike around 3am (night hiking is not recommended unless you’re familiar with the terrain and area) since the strong Arizona heat can zap the strength right out of you (even the most seasoned of hikers). But, as I was checking out some other blogs and websites, I found some great stories and more helpful information.

You need to make a reservation well in advance, and be sure to keep that confirmation number handy as they will ask for it upon check in. To get to Havasu Falls, you drive to Hualapai Hilltop, which can be reached at the end of Indian Road 18 just 68 miles north of Route 66. The parking area is at Huakapai Hilltop and is also the beginning of the trail that takes you through a narrow canyon as you make your way to the village. From here, it’s an 8 mile hike to the village of Supai and then another 2 miles to the beginning of the campground which stretches along Havasu Creek. Campground sites are on a first come first serve basis and are rich with towering cottonwood trees and lush vegetation. It seems the best time to go is April/May since the temperatures in the summer can get quite extreme. Either way, you have the option of plunging into the crystal clear waters for a refreshing swim. If you’re going for the weekend you can explore Havasu Falls on the first day and have enough time to explore Navajo Falls and Mooney Falls on the second day, each having its own special and distinct character.

For anyone who wants to escape the daily rat race, what better way to spend two days then by camping for a couple of nights by the river and playing in GORGEOUS Water falls!!! You can bet I’ll be taking the annual trip this year.
