The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is located approximately 30 miles north of The San Diego Zoo.The Africa Tram Safari
EXPLORE THE WONDERS OF AFRICA!
Travel through a bit of Africa on the Park's Africa Tram Safari, an exciting expedition that gives you a chance to connect with our African wildlife on a closer level. The safari's brightly colored tour vehicles take you on a relaxing tour around some of the Park's large field exhibits, where you can enjoy our extraordinary animal collection.
Africa has a dizzying mix of habitats, animals, and cultures, and the Africa Tram Safari tour gives you a glimpse of this amazing diversity. Your knowledgeable guide fills you in on the animals at the Park, and points out particular individuals and interesting behaviors you may be observing. All your favorites are here: herds of curious giraffes, massive rhinos, graceful gazelles, and impressively horned antelope.
During the Africa Tram Safari, you'll get a new appreciation for just how huge a rhinoceros or Cape buffalo is. You'll see ostriches, African crowned cranes, and other birds mixing and mingling with the famous mammal residents, and many hang out around a large waterhole. As you cross the bridge and round the bend, you'll see some of the most beautiful views in the Park. As you return to the station, you may even see a lion or two resting on the hillside. But don't think your connection to Africa is ending—there's even more of Africa to explore throughout the Park!
Lion Camp®
You're face to face with a lion, and its big, golden eyes are staring at you with piercing intensity. Is this it - are you lunch? No! You're just experiencing the amazing close encounters of the Safari Park's Lion Camp!
There is a thick glass window between you and the lions, but when you're standing there and one comes charging up to the rocks only inches away, you might just forget that for a moment. Lion Campis designed to bring you right into the world of African lions, and you won't want to miss this exhibit!
Elephant Overlook
We have two large exhibit areas for our elephant herds - one for our Asian elephant group and another one for our African elephants. An elevated walking path called the Elephant Overlook takes you out between the two exhibit areas to see what our pachyderms are up to. You can also view elephants next to Tembo Stadium or along the road next to the Asian elephants' enclosure.
Hidden Jungle®
This tropical rainforest is teeming with wildlife that is absolutely beautiful, but often hard to see. In the Hidden Jungle, a glass-walled greenhouse exhibit, you get a chance to observe the wonderful secrets of the rain forests, which are rapidly disappearing around the world.
You'll begin your Hidden Jungle trek in an earthen crevice beneath the rainforest floor. As your eyes adjust to the dark, you can pick out tree roots snaking down the walls from the world above. Mud walls come to life with invertebrates, including spiny stick insects and scorpions, all safely sealed with transparent barriers and dimly lit from within.
Filled with lush plantings and botanical beauties of the rainforest, Hidden Jungle will show you the delight and wonder of looking under and among the leaves, instead of just above them. This exhibit is not only extremely educational, but you will be in awe of what lies beneath the surface.
