California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco
Explore earth, ocean and space – all in one place by visiting the “Greenest Museum” in the World.

Named by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the ‘New Wonders of the World’, the California Academy of Sciences is the only place on the planet to combine:

  • Aquarium (including world’s deepest Philippine Coral Reef)
  • Natural history museum
  • World's largest all-digital planetarium
  • Four-story rainforest dome with free flying birds & butterflies
  • All under a 2.5 acre living roof

Your entrance ticket to the Academy includes all exhibits and shows (please note some shows are capacity controlled and subject to availability).

Popular Shows & Attractions
Explore the tropical forests of Borneo in Bugs3D! Interact with Claude, the Albino Alligator and encounter Pierre, Howard, Ocio and the other members of the South African Penguin colony.

In the rainforest dome you'll join the free flying birds and butterflies who inhabit the rainforests of Borneo, Madagascar, Costa Rica and the flooded Amazon. Come face-to-face with Borneo bats, chameleons, poison dart frogs, leaf cutter ants, gliders, snakes, and so much more.

You won't want to miss the latest amazing digital planetarium show 'Journey to the Stars', where actress and activist Whoopi Goldberg will take you on a journey through time and space to perceive firsthand the dramatic lives and deaths of stars. See brilliant supernova explosions and explore the heart of the sun as it transforms into a giant red ball five billion years in the future (7-10 times a day).

Guests of all ages will enjoy meeting animals, educators and biologists in hands-on exhibits. Check out the penguin feeding, swamp talk, coral reef and lagoon sessions (times and days vary).

Designed by award-winning architect Renzo Piano, the museum will inspire lifelong curiosity for the natural world as you experience the depths of a Philippine coral reef, climb into the canopy of a Costa Rican rainforest, and fly to the outer reaches of the Universe.

About the Academy
The California Academy of Sciences is a multifaceted scientific institution committed to leading-edge research, educational outreach, and finding new and innovative ways to engage and inspire the public.

The Academy's mission - to explore, explain and protect the natural world - extends to all corners of the institution; from a research expedition in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, to a teacher training program in a California classroom, to an interactive game on the museum exhibit floor.

Handicap Accessibility
The Academy provides a wide variety of services to individuals with disabilities.

  • Wheelchairs are available at the Coat Check on a first come, first served basis.
  • Accessible parking is available in the underground garage.
  • Assistive listening devices are available for visitors who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
  • Service animals are the only animals the public is allowed to bring into the museum.
